En 1912, Luis Emilio Recabarren funda, en Iquique, el Partido Obrero Socialista. Paralelamente existen organizaciones socialistas en Santiago, Valparaíso, Magallanes y otras ciudades. Todas ellas confluyen en 1915 en el Primer Congreso del Partido Obrero Socialista (POS), celebrado en Viña del Mar, ciudad donde se había configurado un fuerte grupo socialista, encabezado por el obrero zapatero Ramón Sepúlveda Leal. [...] En la medida que el desarrollo económico de fines de siglo iba promoviendo la formación de un proletariado, especialmente minero y también industrial y urbano, comenzaron a proliferar diferentes movimientos socialistas grandemente influidos por tendencias que llegaban desde Europa, especialmente desde Francia y Alemania, aflorando organizaciones obreras de resistencia surgidas antes que los propios partidos políticos.
